Move your website to new hosting without a messy cutover

Changing web hosting should not mean a weekend of “site not found” and missing enquiry forms. A short plan — copy first, point DNS later — keeps customers on your old site until the new one is ready.

1. Inventory before you copy

List domains, subdomains, SSL, email on the same domain, databases, and who controls the registrar. Many “hosting moves” break mail because someone changed the A record and accidentally wiped MX. Keep mail DNS separate unless you intend to move mail too — see our DNS habits.

2. Stage on the new host

Upload files and databases to the new account, test via temporary URL or hosts-file override, fix broken paths, and install SSL for the real domain name before public cutover. Confirm forms and HTTPS redirects while the world still hits the old server.

3. Lower TTL, then flip DNS

A day or two before go-live, lower DNS TTL if you can. At cutover, change A / CNAME to the new host only. Propagation can take minutes to hours — do not panic-delete the old hosting until you have verified the live site and a contact form submit.

4. Post-cutover checklist

• Homepage, key landing pages, and mobile layout
• HTTPS padlock with no mixed-content warnings
• Enquiry / WhatsApp CTAs still work
• Mail still arrives (if MX was untouched)
