Domain registration and DNS — habits that keep mail and sites live

· KC Cloud

Your domain is the address on every invoice, WhatsApp status, and Google listing. Registering a name is easy; keeping DNS, mail, and renewals tidy is what stops “site down” and “mail bouncing” on busy mornings. Domain registration with clear DNS ownership matters as much as the yearly fee.

Pick a name you can renew for years

Prefer short, spellable brands. .in and .com both work for Indian firms — many keep both and redirect one. Avoid names locked to a personal email you will lose; use a company contact that two people can access.

DNS is the map — not the website

A records and CNAMEs point visitors to hosting. MX and related records send mail to Titan, Workspace, or another provider. Changing hosts without updating DNS leaves the old server answering. Changing mail without MX updates means replies vanish. Change one service at a time and wait for TTL to settle.

Who controls the registrar panel?

If only a freelance designer holds the registrar login, renewals and transfers become hostage situations. Keep registrar access with the business, grant the agency DNS or hosting rights only, and note the expiry date in a shared calendar — not only in someone’s inbox.

Transfer and lock basics

Before moving a domain, unlock it, get the auth/EPP code, and expect a short transfer window. Do not start a transfer the day mail or a festival campaign must not break. After transfer, re-check nameservers so they still match your host and email plan.

Quick hygiene list

  • Registrar login under a company mailbox, with 2FA if available
  • Auto-renew on, plus a calendar reminder 30 days before expiry
  • Written note of where A / MX / SPF / DKIM currently point
  • Same brand domain for site and business email
